Colorado sweeps top three spots at Big 12 women’s cross country championships

The Big 12 Women’s Cross Country Championships took place on November 2, 2002, at the University of Missouri’s A.L. Gustin Golf Course. The event featured athletes from various universities competing in a 6-kilometer race.

Molly Austin from Colorado finished first with a time of 20:26.32. Her teammates Sara Gorton and Natalie Florence followed closely, securing second and third places with times of 20:37.78 and 20:40.75, respectively. Debbie Thornhill from Baylor finished fourth, while Valerie Lauver from Missouri was fifth with a time of 20:58.52.

Other notable performances included Talis Apud-Martinez from Texas in sixth place and Melissa Gulli from Texas A&M in seventh. Laura Lavoie of Kansas placed eighth, Amy Mortimer of Kansas State was ninth, and Jessica Huff of Iowa State completed the top ten.

Missouri had several runners finish in the top thirty, including Amanda Bales (23rd), Katherine Bonugli (24th), Kim Moore (26th), Amy Chipman (29th), Serena Ramsey (37th), Ashley McLeod (38th), Lesley Smith (48th), and Kristin Hansen (49th).

The championship brought together teams from across the Big 12 Conference to compete for individual and team honors.
