Dave Fox was presented with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award during the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Basketball Show-Me Showdown, according to a Mar. 18 announcement. The award recognizes more than forty years of Fox’s dedication to education, coaching, and promoting high school athletics in Missouri.

The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award is given to individuals whose lifelong commitment has made a lasting impact on interscholastic activities across the state. Fox’s career as a teacher, coach, administrator, and executive director reflects this enduring dedication to student-athletes and community engagement.

Fox is a Columbia native and former standout at Rock Bridge High School, where he played on the Bruins’ 1978 Final Four team before becoming a four-year letter winner at Central Methodist College. He began his teaching and coaching career in 1984 and joined Jefferson City High School in 1986. There, he served in multiple coaching roles before becoming head boys basketball coach in 1993. Over his twenty-five years with the Jays program, Fox helped guide six Final Four teams—three as an assistant coach and three as head coach—and compiled 298 career wins, the most in program history.

In 2011, Fox became Executive Director of the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association and later served as Executive Director of the Show-Me State Games. Under his leadership, these games continued to thrive by promoting opportunities for Missourians of all ages to participate in sports. Even after retiring from coaching and executive leadership roles, Fox has remained involved by broadcasting high school basketball on KWOS Radio for nine seasons and participating in broadcast teams for both the MSHSAA Basketball Show-Me Showdown and Norm Stewart Classic. He also recently returned to Jefferson City High School as a Driver Education Instructor.

Fox has received several honors throughout his career, including induction into both the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award is named after longtime MSHSAA attorney Mal Mayse and recognizes individuals whose careers exemplify integrity, service, and commitment to member schools.
