The University of Missouri swimming and diving team set new records and achieved multiple podium finishes at the SEC Championships on Friday in Auburn, Alabama. Junior Grant Bochenski led the way by breaking the program record in the 100-yard backstroke during preliminaries with a time of 45.19 seconds, surpassing Daniel Hein’s five-year-old mark of 45.26 seconds. Bochenski improved his performance in the finals, finishing in 44.96 seconds to secure fourth place and become the first Missouri swimmer to complete the event in under 45 seconds.
In other events, sophomore Jan Zubik finished second in the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:41.20 after leading all swimmers in preliminaries with a 1:40.95, narrowly missing Danny Kovac’s school record.
On the men’s platform dive, sophomore Collier Dyer earned silver with a score of 397.00, while Tommaso Zannella increased his finals score by nearly 69 points to finish in the top ten.
Graduate Will Goodwin set a personal best of 52.18 seconds in the men’s 100 breaststroke finals, placing ninth and moving up to sixth on Missouri’s all-time leaderboard for that event. In women’s competition, sophomore Lina Bank twice broke her own personal record in the 100 breaststroke before finishing thirteenth with a time of 1:00.01.
Other notable performances included Ty Spillane (13th), Darden Tate (17th), and Logan Ottke (23rd) joining Goodwin in the men’s 100 breaststroke finals; freshman Emily Roden finishing thirteenth in the women’s 200 fly; sophomore Sam Brown earning fifteenth place in the men’s 100 back; senior Mikolaj Malec claiming sixteenth place in the men’s 200 fly; and senior Holley Dennis securing twentieth place in the women’s 100 breast.
Missouri will compete on Saturday for the final day of SEC Championships, with preliminary races scheduled for several events starting at 9:30 a.m., which fans can watch live on SEC Network+.
