In 2024, Medicaid providers in Mexico billed a total of $12,154 for services under the Pathology and Laboratory Procedures category, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. This represents a 455.2% surge from 2023, when $2,189 was billed for comparable services.

Medicaid is a public insurance program administered by the states and funded jointly through federal and state resources. It serves low-income individuals, families, seniors, children and people with disabilities, representing one of the biggest components of the U.S. health care landscape.

Since taxpayers support Medicaid payments, fluctuations in local billing reveal how public health care funds are dispersed within a community.

The “Pathology and Laboratory Procedures” group consists of Medicaid-billed care defined by standardized HCPCS and CPT code groupings. For this report, each billing code was assigned exclusively to a service category using systematic code prefixes and numeric allocations, allowing for consistent analysis without double counting, and maintaining accurate category rankings year over year.

Although Medicaid costs saw increases for various category types, Pathology and Laboratory Procedures held the seventh position for total Medicaid payments in Mexico in 2024.

Statewide in Missouri, the Pathology and Laboratory Procedures group placed eighth in overall Medicaid payments for 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, payments attached to Pathology and Laboratory Procedures in Mexico rose by $33,653, an increase of 73.5%. Certain periods saw especially sharp year-to-year growth, notably in 2022 and 2023.

While such payments for Pathology and Laboratory Procedures were distributed throughout the city, a small number of ZIP codes dominated. In 2024, ZIP code 65265 made up the entirety of payments in this category, at $12,154. Altogether, 1 ZIP code represented 100% of Medicaid spending in this category in Mexico for the year.

Payments within the Pathology and Laboratory Procedures service category were also concentrated among just a few billing codes.

Looking at trends, payments for Pathology and Laboratory Procedures in Mexico increased 455.2% between 2024 and 2023, far surpassing a 15.9% rise seen across all Medicaid claim categories in the city during the same time frame.

Data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services show that federal and state Medicaid expenditures totaled about $871.7 billion during fiscal 2023, accounting for around 18% of all U.S. health expenses and rising quickly from $613.5 billion before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019.

This difference reflects nearly 40% growth in just a few years, largely because of expanding enrollment figures and greater health service utilization during and after the pandemic.

Recently passed federal budget measures from the Trump administration have included major proposals to decrease federal Medicaid contributions and reshape the program’s design. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is estimated to cut federal Medicaid spending by more than $1 trillion over the next decade and introduces changes such as new work requirements and greater cost-sharing. These changes could restrict funding and coverage for some participants, shift expenses onto states, and curb federal Medicaid growth even as the program continues to serve millions across the country.
