Missouri lost to No. 15 Memphis 2-1 on Thursday evening at the Billy J. Murphy Athletics Complex.
Mia Yang scored Missouri’s only goal in the 41st minute, which was also the first of her career. Landis Canada set up the play with a free kick into the penalty area, where Yang headed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
The score remained tied for nearly half an hour before Memphis, now 5-0-0 this season, broke through on its ninth shot out of 14 total attempts, five of which were on target. Missouri goalkeeper Kate Phillips made two saves during the match.
Memphis took an early lead in the 26th minute with its first shot on goal. Less than a minute later, Emily Derucki took Missouri’s first shot, but it was blocked and deflected wide. After Yang’s equalizer, both teams entered halftime with one goal each.
In the second half, Missouri increased its attacking efforts with four shots in the opening 20 minutes. Following a Memphis turnover, Derucki recovered possession and sent a left-footed shot from about 15 yards out that was saved by Memphis’ goalkeeper. Derucki finished with three shots overall; her last attempt went just over the crossbar.
Keegan Good added another chance for Missouri in the 58th minute when she maneuvered around defenders and forced a save from Memphis’ goalkeeper.
After Memphis scored again in the 71st minute to take a 2-1 lead, Missouri’s final opportunity came from Morgan Meador, whose attempt was blocked.
Missouri will finish its road trip Sunday at Missouri State. The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
