Missouri Tigers baseball lost the opening game of a three-game Southeastern Conference series against No. 6 Texas, 6-3, on May 14 at Disch-Falk Field.
The game began with Jase Woita hitting his team-leading 12th home run of the season, giving Missouri an early lead. However, Texas tied the score in the third inning and took their first lead with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Junior right-hander Josh McDevitt started for Missouri and pitched three innings, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters before being relieved by Dane Bjorn due to pitch count. In the sixth inning, Texas extended its lead with a two-run home run by Casey Borba and an RBI single. Missouri responded in the eighth inning when Jamal George doubled and later scored along with Woita after hits from Woita and catcher Mateo Serna.
Texas answered back in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run by Carson Tinney to make it 6-3. Freshman closer Sam Cozart retired Missouri’s side in order during the ninth inning to secure Texas’ win.
Woita finished 2-for-4 with a home run, double, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. George went 1-for-3 with a double and one run scored; Serna was also 1-for-4 with an RBI. Redshirt-freshman Donovan Jordan went 1-for-3 returning to Austin as a transfer from Texas. Shortstop Kam Durnin added another hit for Missouri along with a walk.
The teams will play again Friday night at Disch-Falk Field for game two of their series. All games can be streamed on Varsity Network by Learfield.
