MSHSAA recognizes Dr. Eric Morris with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award

Dr. Eric Morris was presented with the Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award during the 2026 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Speech & Debate Championships award ceremony, recognizing a career defined by leadership, vision and lifelong dedication to high school athletics in Missouri.

The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award honors individuals whose lifelong commitment has made a lasting impact on interscholastic activities across the state.

Dr. Morris serves as an associate professor of communication and director of the Missouri State University debate program, where he leads students in intercollegiate competition in both NDT/CEDA and NFA-LD formats. Under his leadership, the program has emphasized both competitive excellence and accessibility, welcoming students of all experience levels.

Beyond his work in the classroom and in competition, Dr. Morris has been a key contributor and liaison between MSHSAA and Missouri State University, playing an essential role in the successful hosting of the MSHSAA Speech & Debate Championships on the Missouri State campus. His collaboration, organization and commitment have helped create a high-quality championship experience for students, coaches and schools across the state.

A respected scholar in communication studies, Dr. Morris earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas, with research focused on presidential debates and political communication. His publications explore debate strategy, public argumentation, and the framing of political issues.

At the national level, Dr. Morris has served in numerous leadership roles including executive secretary of the American Forensic Association and president of the Cross Examination Debate Association while remaining actively involved with the National Debate Tournament for decades. His contributions have been recognized with awards such as George Zieglemueller Lifetime Service Award and National Debate Tournament Coach of the Year honors.

The Mal Mayse Distinguished Service Award is named after longtime MSHSAA attorney Mal Mayse to recognize individuals whose careers exemplify integrity, service and commitment to member schools.
