U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri said on Mar. 13 that Democrats are responsible for both illegal and legal immigration problems, criticizing their approach to border security and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding during an appearance on Fox News’ Ingraham Angle.
Schmitt’s comments come as debates continue over federal immigration policy and the funding of key agencies. The senator argued that current policies have led to increased migration and security concerns.
“Voters are smarter than that, and I think it’s important to put this in context. The Democrats let in 15 million people in this country, including tens of thousands of murderers, hundreds of thousands of violent criminals and terrorists, and now what they’re doing is defunding the Department of Homeland Security, among sleeper cells that we know of and terrorist attacks. I mean, this is insanity at the highest level. They simply just care more about defunding ICE than they do about anything else, because they want open borders, they want mass amnesty, and they think they can get it if we don’t actually enforce our immigration laws. Republicans should hold firm here. We voted to fund all of them. We voted to fund TSA, Coast Guard, Secret Service, all the other agencies wrapped up in this. But the Democrats have voted no because of Trump Derangement Syndrome and their obsession with open borders and mass migration,” Schmitt said during the interview.
He also addressed broader issues related to legal immigration: “There’s a few things we need to do. One, we need to make sure the border remains closed. The deportations need to continue, regardless of the Democrat whining about it. They don’t think that a sovereign country should ever be able to tell people, you know, who can come and who should have to leave. We should not relent on that. And then also, we need to reform our legal immigration system. A lot of these people have come in legally. A lot of American workers have been displaced by foreign workers. A lot of American students have been displaced by these visa mills at universities and tax breaks that companies get after the fact…”
Schmitt serves as a U.S. Senator from Missouri through official appointment according to his official website. He operates as a governmental entity focused on legislative representation for Missouri according to his official website.
The senator maintains offices across Missouri in cities such as Columbia, Springfield, Kansas City and Cape Girardeau as well as Washington D.C., providing services statewide according to his official website. He also serves on key Senate committees including Armed Services and Commerce, Science and Transportation according to his official website.
As discussions over border security continue nationally, Schmitt’s remarks highlight ongoing divisions over how best to address both illegal entry into the United States and reforms within existing legal immigration systems.
