U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) discussed the SAVE America Act and his views on voter identification during an appearance on Fox Business’ Evening Edit, according to a March 20 statement.
The discussion is significant as it highlights ongoing debates in Congress about election integrity, citizenship requirements for voting, and the use of photo identification at the polls.
Schmitt described the SAVE America Act as “common sense legislation that the majority of Americans support.” He said, “Look, this isn’t controversial anywhere in the country, except here in Congress, with Congressional and Senate Democrats. And the truth is, Liz, they want to be able to cheat. They brought 15 million people here illegally, and they want to make it easier to cheat through mass mail in balloting, no photo ID, you don’t have to be an American citizen, and I think we’re standing up for the American people, saying American elections are for American citizens. And this is sort of a basic level of competence I think we should have as a country, if you want to hold on to it. But the Democrats, again, have just so been so radicalized. If Chuck Schumer could only talk to his former self if the ghost of Chuck Schumer from the 90s would haunt Chuck Schumer tonight, he would whisper into his ear, Chuck, you’ve lost your mind. You need to vote for this bill. We’ll see if that happens.”
Addressing opposition from Senate Democrats regarding voter ID laws, Schmitt said: “It’s very difficult to determine after the fact, what we do know happens currently, is there are some illegal immigrants that get driver’s licenses. If you have a driver’s license, you can register to vote oftentimes. And so, this is the flaw in the system…when you let that many people in here illegally…they shouldn’t be allowed to vote. We should be able to…stand together in a sane country…and say…we don’t think non-citizens…should be able to vote in our elections. The Democrats are unwilling to say that…they’re also unwilling to say that you should have to show who you are at the ballot box when you’re voting….90 percent of America agrees with it….that’s why they lost the last election….this debate is highlighting how insane they’ve become.”
Schmitt has engaged Missouri youth through programs such as his Senator’s Youth Council aimed at promoting civic engagement and leadership according to his official website. He comes from a sixth-generation Missouri family with backgrounds in farming, teaching and small business ownership according to his official website. As vice chairman of the Joint Economic Committee and member of other Senate committees including Judiciary and Armed Services according to his official website, Schmitt focuses on issues such as protecting free speech and supporting families with special needs—a cause inspired by personal family experiences involving his son Stephen according to his official website.
The broader implications of these discussions reflect ongoing national debates over election security measures and access requirements at polling places.
