In August, the spotlight is on the COMO Trail Association, a nonprofit organization established in 2018. The association partners with City and State Parks as well as Conservation Areas to build, maintain, and promote sustainable natural surface trail use near and around Columbia.
While it’s a year-round job, September through April is when most of the nonprofit’s activity takes place. "Believe it or not, but December–February are our best months for work event attendance since it is a wonderful time of year to be in the woods and people are less busy with other activities like vacations," said Nate Smith, the Association’s vice president.
The Association averages 20 public work events a year, with a consistent turnout of 15-20 volunteers. Larger events can have as many as 50 people contributing their time to the cause.
In the fall and spring, volunteers might find themselves working on tread restoration or sawing up downed trees. In the summer, the focus shifts to maintenance tasks.
