The Columbia Fire Department invites the community to join the kick-off of Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 6 at the Columbia Mall, located at 2300 Bernadette Drive. This free, family-friendly event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering an educational afternoon for attendees.

Highlights of the day include music, food, games, bounce houses for children, and a live fire extinguisher demonstration. Smoke detectors will be given away, and various activities are planned to be both entertaining and informative.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” The campaign, led by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), emphasizes the importance of working smoke alarms in saving lives. According to NFPA data, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half; however, three out of five fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or with non-functional ones.

The Columbia Fire Department will share essential smoke alarm safety tips throughout the event. For additional information and resources about Fire Prevention Week and home safety measures, visit the National Fire Protection Association website.
