The Public Health and Human Services (PHHS) department is urging community members to get vaccinated as flu season approaches. The flu, a contagious respiratory illness, can lead to hospitalization and sometimes death.

PHHS advises that individuals who are sick should stay home, as the flu can be spread up to seven days after symptoms appear. The annual flu vaccine is recommended as the best method to maintain health during this period.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), everyone aged six months or older should receive the flu vaccine. This measure reduces the risk of contracting the illness and spreading it to others.

For information on when and where to get the flu vaccine, residents can contact PHHS at 573.874.CITY (2489) or TTY (MoRelay) 711.

The City of Columbia's mission is "to serve the public equitably through democratic, transparent, and efficient government," aiming to make Columbia "the best place for everyone to live, work, learn and play."
