Conrad Johnson has been named the City of Columbia's Volunteer of the Month for September 2024. Johnson began his volunteer work this summer through the city's Youth in Action program, which targets youth aged 12-15 to provide valuable opportunities for community involvement, skill development, and social interaction.

Johnson was inspired to join by his older brother, who had previously participated in the program. "It sounded like fun, so I joined and now love it," he said.

Throughout the summer, Johnson volunteered alongside Recycling Ambassadors at various events including Orr Street Farm and Art Market, Fire in the Sky, and paint consolidation at Household Hazardous Waste. Reflecting on his experiences, he shared: "I have met people and learned about them; I have helped the community (obviously). I got a t-shirt. I learned a good work ethic by volunteering on Saturday morning, and it was fun to do!"

Entering seventh grade this year, Johnson enjoys games of all kinds, traveling with friends, and playing multiple musical instruments such as the flute, saxophone, and piano. He is also active with Jabberwocky Studios and has performed at several public events in Columbia including March March, which kicks off the True/False Film Festival.

For those considering volunteering, Johnson offers this advice: "You should absolutely do it in order to get to know people and help the community out. And if you don’t like the volunteer activity that you did, try a new one!"
