City Utilities has issued a reminder to Columbia residents about the importance of proper yard waste disposal this autumn. The initiative aims to protect the city's stormwater system from potential damage caused by improper disposal methods.
As leaves fall and accumulate, many residents seek to clear their yards of natural debris. However, raking, washing, or blowing leaves and grass clippings into streets or storm drains can cause significant issues. The Stormwater Utility emphasizes that such practices are detrimental to both the ecosystem and community safety.
In Columbia, stormwater flows untreated into local creeks, lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Yard waste in these water bodies adds excess nutrients, leading to increased algae growth and reduced water clarity. In severe cases, it can lower dissolved oxygen levels, harming fish and other aquatic life.
Improper disposal also poses risks to neighborhoods. Leaves and clippings can block storm drain inlets or pipes when they mix with other debris. Blockages can lead to street and yard flooding or even cause backups into homes, resulting in property damage.
Residents are encouraged to report any problematic inlets or storm pipes by emailing [email protected] or calling 573-874-CITY (2489).
The City urges all community members to dispose of yard waste responsibly this season to prevent harm to the stormwater system.
