The City of Columbia Utilities has announced that during recent field investigations, no lead water service lines were found in the city's water distribution system. However, there remains a slight possibility that some lead service lines exist.
To ensure the accuracy of its Lead Service Line Inventory and comply with the Environmental Protection Agency's latest revisions to the Lead and Copper Rule, the city is requesting residents' help. Water customers are asked to identify the material of their home's water service line, which connects their residence to the main water line in the street. Part of this line is owned by the utility, while homeowners own the other portion.
"The water City of Columbia Utilities provides to customers is lead-free," stated a city representative. They added that lead can enter drinking water through corroded plumbing materials containing lead. In homes without lead service lines, issues often arise from brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and plumbing with lead solder.
Residents can find more information on how to participate in this initiative and take a survey on the Lead Compliance Program page on the city's BeHeard website.
