U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) led a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing focused on what he described as a cover-up of President Joe Biden's mental decline and the implications for national governance. The hearing marked the first full committee session dedicated to this issue, with Schmitt expressing concerns about the perceived lack of transparency.
"President Biden’s decline did not suddenly begin in June of 2024," stated Schmitt during his opening remarks. He argued that signs of cognitive issues were evident long before, yet remained unaddressed publicly. "The truth was glaringly obvious: Anyone who was paying attention could tell that the Emperor had no clothes."
Schmitt criticized Democrats on the committee for their near absence from the proceedings, describing it as a "de facto boycott." He remarked, "Their absence speaks volumes—an implicit admission that the truth is too inconvenient to face." According to Schmitt, this absence signifies a neglect of duty to provide answers about presidential leadership.
In lieu of minority witnesses, Schmitt presented a video featuring Biden Administration members denying any cognitive decline in President Biden. During discussions, Theo Wold, Director of the Administrative State Project, highlighted concerns over document authentication within administrations. Wold suggested that if there were doubts about President Biden's decision-making capacity during his term, presenting documentation could clarify these issues.
Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer also testified regarding media coverage related to Biden's mental state. Additionally, Professor John Harrison addressed potential legal challenges concerning decisions made without presidential oversight.
Concluding the session, Schmitt asked witnesses for recommendations to prevent similar situations with future presidents.
