Keegan Good, a University of Missouri soccer player, is balancing her athletic pursuits with her aspirations in the medical field. As the leading goal scorer for the Tigers, Good spent her spring semester preparing for the MCAT to further her dream of attending medical school.
This summer, she continues to merge these interests by residing in Rochester, Minnesota. There, she plays for Rochester FC and interns at the Mayo Clinic. "Doing research in a world-class hospital is an opportunity unlike anything I could have imagined for myself," Good stated.
Rochester's history was shaped by Dr. William Worrall Mayo, who established his practice there in 1864. Today, Good works alongside professionals committed to patient care and innovation. "Knowing that the projects I'm working on will directly impact patient outcomes is a rewarding and exciting experience," she said.
After her clinic shifts, Good practices with Rochester FC, part of the USL W League. Dr. Rafael Sierra, an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo and part-owner of the club, shared insights about its origins: "My two partners were the ones that started the club in 2018."
Good faces a demanding schedule but has adapted over time. Reflecting on this period, she said: "I eventually found a schedule that worked for me... It definitely tested me."
Her father, James Good, also pursued medicine and works as a podiatrist in Gladstone, Missouri. This influence drives Keegan both academically and athletically. "I'm just an insanely competitive person," she remarked.
While still undecided on her medical specialty, plastic surgery remains a potential interest due to her passion for art and science. Currently, she contributes to Dr. Sierra's research team at Mayo Clinic.
As summer ends, Good will return to Columbia for her senior season with Mizzou Soccer. Her efforts have already left an impression both at Mizzou and among colleagues at Mayo Clinic.
"Her tenacity... really builds an incredible physician," Dr. Sierra commented.
