Missouri Tigers women's soccer team lost its season opener 1-0 to No. 23 Saint Louis on Sunday at Robert R. Hermann Stadium in St. Louis. The only goal of the match came in the fifth minute, giving the Billikens an early lead that Missouri was unable to overcome.
Despite outshooting Saint Louis and earning more corner kicks in the second half, both by a margin of 5-4, Missouri could not find the equalizer. Emily Derucki had an early opportunity to score in the ninth minute but was stopped by the Billikens' goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper Kate Phillips made four saves for Missouri, including one in the 31st minute where she intercepted a shot attempt over a Saint Louis forward. In the second half, Keegan Good took a shot from inside the penalty area in the 73rd minute but it was blocked by a defender.
Late attempts from Good and Derucki did not find their mark, with Derucki's shot going wide left with under four minutes remaining. In the final moments of play, Ava Lamothe had Missouri's last chance off a corner kick with less than a minute left, but her shot was blocked for the third time that evening.
Missouri will continue its road schedule on Thursday when it visits No. 24 Memphis at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
