Senator Eric Schmitt, U.S. Senator from Missouri, posted a series of tweets on September 9, 2025, calling for greater recognition of Pat Buchanan's contributions to American politics and urging President Biden to award him the nation's highest civilian honor.
In one tweet, Schmitt wrote: "Nevertheless, in both his political campaigns and his prolific writings, Buchanan made an extraordinary impact on American politics. He gave millions of Americans a language to describe what was happening to their country—and showed them that they were not alone in their beliefs." (September 9, 2025)
He continued by noting Buchanan's influence on conservative movements: "He showed that countless ordinary Americans hungered for the very ideas that President Trump championed in his historic road to victory two decades later. Today, he's rightly regarded as a hero by America First conservatives. But he's never received the recognition he deserves." (September 9, 2025)
Schmitt also referenced a letter he sent to President Biden advocating for Buchanan's recognition: "We should make that right.
As I wrote in my letter to @POTUS:
'In awarding him with our nation’s highest civilian honor, you would not only be recognizing the service of one man but vindicating the cause he fought for—a cause which finally found its champion in your person.'" (September 9, 2025)
