Mizzou Cross Country opened its 2020 season at the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tennessee, competing against Southeastern Conference teams. The Tigers placed six runners in the top ten across both the men's and women's races.

The men's team finished second with 42 points, while the women's team secured third place with 63 points. Senior Sarah Chapman led the women with a second-place finish and a time of 21:07.2. Freshman William Sinclair was the top performer for the men, placing third in his collegiate debut with a time of 24:37.8.

Both teams improved on their results from last year’s event, where the women finished fourth and the men fifth.

Additional top-ten finishes for the men came from Kieran Wood, Marquette Wilhite, and Martin Prodanov. This marks the first time since August 2019 that four Mizzou men have finished in the top ten at an event. On the women’s side, Ginger Murnieks took seventh place and McKenna Revord finished thirteenth in her first college race.

Mizzou Head Coach Marc Burns commented on the men’s performance: "Great start for both of our teams today. The men looked strong with four up front most of the race. Will really closed hard to separate and end up third. Kieran, Marquette and Martin are very fit right now and we should have a solid top four this fall. Jack came up big for us as our fifth today in his debut."

Burns also addressed the women’s results: "Our women ran well up front but we will need to figure out how to be better from 3-5 if we want to be a factor at SEC's. We have the ability to do it and it is just a matter of time for us to put it together on race day. Sarah has looked great in training and it showed today in her performance. Ginger has also made a big jump and will help us up front!

Overall we are thankful to be on the road competing. These experiences are a big part of the development of our team!"

The Tigers will return home for two regular-season meets at Gans Creek Cross Country Course: the Gans Creek Classic on October 3 and the Mizzou XC Invitational on October 16.
