Senator Eric Schmitt has used his social media platform to criticize Democratic lawmakers over the ongoing government shutdown, attributing the impasse to disagreements regarding healthcare provisions for undocumented immigrants.

On October 5, 2025, Schmitt stated: "Facts are facts: Democrats are shutting down the government because they want to give illegal immigrants free healthcare. They’re much more interested in grandstanding than governing."

The following day, he reiterated his position by posting: "Democrats are holding government funding hostage over taxpayer funded healthcare for illegal immigrants. The ball is in their court to reopen the government and get back to work for the American people." This message echoed his earlier criticism of Democratic priorities during budget negotiations.

Later on October 6, Schmitt addressed a proposed spending bill directly, writing: "A $1.5 trillion spending bill with free healthcare for illegal immigrants? It’s a no for me and @BasedMikeLee."
