Missouri men’s golf leads Moraine Intercollegiate after record-tying opening day

The University of Missouri men's golf team is leading after the first day of the Moraine Intercollegiate in Ohio, where 14 schools are competing. Three Missouri golfers are currently ranked among the top 10 after two rounds.

The team began Monday with a 15-under-par score of 269, which ties for the fourth-best round in school history and is their lowest since a record-setting round at the 2010 Jackrabbit Invitational. Missouri followed with a seven-under-par 272 in the second round, bringing their total to 21 under par after two rounds.

Heading into the final round, Missouri holds a two-stroke lead over Xavier, which sits at 19 under par. Illinois and Penn State are tied for third place at 15 under par.

Junior Veikka Viskari from Espoo, Finland leads all players with an eight-under total after 36 holes. His first-round score of nine-under-par 62 was a career best by four strokes and ties for the second-best round in Missouri history. Viskari recorded six birdies on the front nine and three more on the back for a clean card and led by four shots after one round. He added a second-round score of even-par 72 to take a one-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round.

Junior Bradley Mulder from Spokane, Washington is tied for second place at seven under par. Mulder posted a bogey-free first round of 66 with five birdies, then shot a two-under-par 69 in his second round, again making five birdies.

Sophomore Trent Mierl finished day one in tenth place overall at five under par. He opened with a 69 before improving to a 68 in his second round, totaling nine birdies across both rounds.

The tournament will conclude Tuesday morning with play starting at 7:45 a.m. Central Time.
