Rep. Mark Alford, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 4th district since 2023, used his social media account on October 17, 2025, to comment on the ongoing federal government shutdown and its impact on military personnel and students.
In his first post of the day, Alford attributed responsibility for the situation to Senate leadership, writing, "We knew the furloughs and layoffs were coming — this is the reality of the Schumer Shutdown. Day 17, America held hostage. Chuck Schumer’s to blame. When the money runs out, you’ve got to start trimming the fat." (October 17, 2025).
Later that afternoon, Alford highlighted efforts by Columbia College to support military students during the shutdown: "Proud to see Columbia College go above and beyond with their ‘You Stand For Us, We Stand By You’ bridge program—ensuring our military students can continue their education without interruption while federal assistance is delayed. Their service isn’t optional, our support" (October 17, 2025).
In a subsequent post that evening, Alford reiterated his criticism of Senate Democrats for their actions during the shutdown: "Day 17 of the Schumer Shutdown. 11 chances. 11 votes. Every single time, Senate Democrats chose to block pay for our troops, Border Patrol, and TSA agents. They’re not “saving democracy.” They’re holding America hostage." (October 17, 2025).
The comments come as Congress remains deadlocked over appropriations bills required to fund government operations. The impasse has resulted in a partial government shutdown affecting federal employees and services nationwide.
Mark Alford succeeded Vicky Hartzler as representative for Missouri’s 4th district in 2023 and has since served in Congress. Born in Baytown, Texas in 1963 and currently residing in Lake Winnebago, Alford graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
