Congressman Mark Alford of Missouri’s 4th District and Congresswoman Hillary Scholten of Michigan’s 3rd District have introduced the AI for Main Street Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at supporting small businesses in evaluating and adopting artificial intelligence (AI). The legislation instructs the Small Business Administration’s Small Business Development Centers to provide guidance, training, and outreach on AI use. This initiative expands on existing programs such as America’s SBDC AI U, with the goal of increasing access to AI support for small businesses across the country.
Alford emphasized the challenges faced by small businesses in keeping up with larger corporations in the adoption of new technologies. “The expanding use of artificial intelligence across America comes with massive opportunities, as well as significant risks,” said Congressman Alford. “As big businesses—which have the financial and human resources needed to invest in this technology—continue to lead the development and adoption of AI, Main Street is being left behind. That’s why we’re introducing the AI for Main Street Act to provide small businesses with the resources, education, and training needed to utilize artificial intelligence.”
Scholten highlighted the broader economic impact of the bill. “This legislation isn’t just about technology - it’s about building an economy and a future that works for everyone, from Silicon Valley all the way to Main Street,” said Rep. Scholten. "As AI creates new industries, reshapes old ones, and redefines the skills people need to succeed, this bill will make sure small businesses aren’t being left behind. I am proud to be introducing this commonsense, bipartisan legislation and I look forward to working with my colleagues to get it passed.”
House Small Business Committee Chairman Roger Williams of Texas also expressed support for the bill. “Artificial intelligence has the power to make small businesses more efficient, competitive, and resilient, but only if they have the tools to use it,” said Williams. “Representative Alford’s bill helps entrepreneurs harness that potential by providing the training and guidance they need to use these tools effectively. By empowering Main Street to embrace innovation, we’re keeping America’s small businesses strong, competitive, and ready for the future.”
Mark Alford has represented Missouri’s 4th District in Congress since 2023, succeeding Vicky Hartzler. He was born in Baytown, Texas in 1963, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 with a BA, and currently resides in Lake Winnebago.
