Senator Eric Schmitt, representing Missouri in the U.S. Senate, used his social media platform on November 4 and 5, 2025, to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and related political issues.

On November 4, Schmitt addressed the cause of the shutdown, stating: "Reminder: The government has been shut down for 5 weeks because Democrats want to give taxpayer funded healthcare to illegal immigrants—and YES, some blue states have been improperly using federal $$$ to fund care for illegals immigrants. Here are the receipts https://t.co/AqfFtR41IM".

Later that day, Schmitt commented on foreign policy and presidential leadership: "Permanent Washington isn't used to having a president that puts America's national interests first. The United States cannot be everywhere, all at once, all the time. President Trump gets that, and now we're moving forward. https://t.co/86c7ylQbO4".

On November 5, Schmitt called for an end to what he referred to as the "Schumer Shutdown," posting: "It’s time to end the Schumer Shutdown NOW! Democrats have played to obstruction game for too long—time to get back to work. https://t.co/6oNNj1fQLQ".

The current government shutdown began in late September 2025 following a lapse in appropriations due to disagreements between Congressional Republicans and Democrats over border security funding and immigration-related provisions. This impasse has led to extended negotiations without resolution. Senator Chuck Schumer serves as Senate Majority Leader during this period.

In recent years, debates over federal funding for healthcare access by undocumented immigrants have intensified. Some states have expanded health programs regardless of immigration status using state funds; however, federal law generally prohibits use of federal Medicaid dollars for undocumented individuals except under limited emergency circumstances.

President Donald Trump served as the 45th president from January 2017 through January 2021 and is referenced by Senator Schmitt regarding current policy directions.
