Senator Eric Schmitt, U.S. Senator representing Missouri, addressed legal and public health issues in a series of posts on November 5, 2025.
In one post, Schmitt discussed ongoing Supreme Court proceedings involving two consolidated cases: "Third, which court has jurisdiction? The argument today features two consolidated cases—one from the Court of International Trade, the other from a district court. This could have implications for the effects of the SCOTUS ruling, because the posture of the cases below differs." (Nov. 5, 2025). On the same day, Schmitt turned his attention to drug policy and enforcement: "We must learn from the fentanyl crisis and get ahead of nitazenes before they spiral out of control. My DETECT Nitazenes Act would empower law enforcement to eliminate these dangerous opioids and protect Missourians and countless other Americans from falling victim to it. https://t.co/llLTBdI3kt" (Nov. 5, 2025).
Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids that have been linked to overdose deaths in recent years. Lawmakers and health officials have expressed concern about their potency and potential for abuse as new synthetic drugs continue to emerge in illicit markets.
Schmitt's legislative proposal follows broader efforts by Congress to address opioid-related harm nationwide through regulation and support for law enforcement initiatives.
