Senator Eric Schmitt, a U.S. Senator from Missouri, used his social media account on November 6, 2025, to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and its implications for Americans.

In a post published at 16:47 UTC, Schmitt addressed Senate Democrats directly, stating, "Hey, Senate Democrats—this government shutdown isn't a game. This is about real Americans' lives."

Later that day at 19:14 UTC, he continued his criticism of Democratic lawmakers by writing, "The Democrats are saying the quiet part out loud. Their entire 'brand' is based on obstruction, holding the American people hostage, and 'fighting' President Trump—consequences be damned. Enough. Open the government, pay our federal workers, and let's get back to work."

At 21:56 UTC on the same day, Schmitt referenced healthcare policy in relation to the shutdown debate: "You don't say. Democrats admit Obamacare failed to bring down the cost of healthcare, but they still chose to shut down the government and hold the American people hostage over it. Make it make sense."

Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass funding legislation for federal agencies and services. During such periods, many federal employees are furloughed or required to work without pay until funding is restored. Political disagreements over budget priorities or specific policies often lead to these impasses.

Obamacare refers to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted in 2010 with goals including expanding health insurance coverage and reducing healthcare costs in the United States.

Senator Eric Schmitt has previously been vocal about fiscal responsibility and healthcare reform during his tenure representing Missouri in Congress.
