The City of Columbia has announced the appointment of Matt Unrein as the new deputy city manager, effective April 29. Unrein had previously served as the assistant city manager for the city since February.
City Manager De’Carlon Seewood expressed confidence in Unrein's abilities, stating, "I have been impressed with Matt’s ability to step into his current role with the City and take off running." Seewood also revealed that the intention behind filling the second assistant city manager position was to groom the individual for the deputy city manager role, a goal Unrein has proven himself ready for during his tenure.
In his new role, Unrein will provide strategic leadership to various City departments, including Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Utilities. Unrein himself acknowledged the hard work and forward-thinking nature of the City staff and departments, expressing his eagerness to contribute his years of experience to the position. He stated, "During my time in the role of assistant city manager, I have been impressed with the hard work and progressive thinking by City staff and departments."
Unrein also shared his enthusiasm for the future, saying, "I appreciate the opportunity to help pave the way forward for future initiatives and to provide support for City Manager Seewood as our organization and city continue to grow."
With his extensive background in public administration, including roles in various cities prior to joining Columbia, Unrein is poised to make significant contributions in his new position as deputy city manager.
