Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann | City of Columbia
Hollie Campbell has resided in Columbia for over a decade but only began volunteering recently. She started in 2023 after exploring the City of Columbia’s volunteer website and discovering various opportunities to serve.
Campbell became involved with Columbia’s volunteer programs in 2023, working with the Litter Team, TreeKeepers, and Household Hazardous Waste Collection. “I wanted to do more in my community to give back for all of the joy my community brings me,” she said.
Currently, Campbell continues her efforts with the Litter Team and TreeKeepers. As a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Aide, she helps keep hazardous materials out of the city’s landfill by ensuring they are repurposed, recycled, or safely disposed of if necessary.
TreeKeepers volunteers undergo training on tree care and maintenance and assist city staff with related projects in local parks. This role suits Campbell well as she maintains a collection of eight different plant propagations at home.
She expressed that her favorite part of volunteering is helping others and experiencing the fulfillment of completing tasks while expanding her network. “The people I’ve encountered, from staff to other volunteers, have all been amazing, with wonderful life experiences they’re happy to share,” she noted.
Outside her volunteer work, Campbell enjoys crocheting blankets and toys and tending to her houseplants. When asked what advice she would give prospective volunteers, she said: “Just start. The only thing holding you back is you!”
