Anthem will remove MU Health Care from its commercial insurance network starting April 1, impacting over 1,200 providers, 80 clinics, and seven hospitals associated with MU Health Care. This development means patients might have increased out-of-pocket expenses or may need to find new in-network providers.

In February, Anthem decided to cease negotiations on a new Medicare Advantage contract and announced the exclusion of MU Health Care from its network effective April 1, 2025. Despite the setback, MU Health Care sought to continue negotiating with Anthem to stay within the commercial insurance network.

Dr. Stevan Whitt, chief medical officer of MU Health Care, emphasized, "It is our highest priority to help our patients who currently have Anthem coverage navigate their care options including continuing care with MU Health Care, if possible."

Patients facing chronic medical conditions could potentially qualify for continuity of care, extending their in-network coverage. The eligibility is determined by Anthem, but MU Health Care has provided guidance to help patients determine their qualifications and how to apply.

The network changes do not affect Healthy Blue Medicaid, University of Missouri Student Advantage plans, prescriptions obtained through Mizzou Pharmacy, or emergency care deemed medically necessary.
