The summer season offers an ideal opportunity to explore the health benefits of swimming. Courtney Ramsey, a family nurse practitioner at Moberly Rural Health Clinic, part of Moberly Regional Medical Center, highlights swimming as a joint-friendly exercise that can aid in maintaining fitness and preventing chronic diseases.
Swimming enhances cardiovascular health by engaging the entire body against water resistance. This activity requires the heart and lungs to work harder to supply oxygen to muscles, which strengthens the heart and may lower blood pressure.
The full-body workout provided by swimming can tone muscles, increase strength and flexibility, and build endurance over time. The activity involves stretching, twisting, and pulling motions that engage major muscle groups such as shoulders, back, abdominals, legs, hips, and glutes.
“As with any exercise, your overall health may improve when you swim regularly and stay active,” said Ramsey. “Swimming can not only be particularly refreshing in the heat of the summer, but it can also pay off with a stronger heart and lungs, a boost to your mood and better sleep.”
Ramsey emphasizes that swimming is suitable for individuals of all ages and physical abilities. Water supports up to 90% of body weight, reducing joint strain often associated with land-based exercises. This makes swimming an excellent option for those with arthritis or recovering from injuries.
Water buoyancy allows for strenuous activities like vigorous kicks and arm strokes without high-impact stress or risk of injury common on land.
The rhythmic breathing involved in swimming can also enhance mood and mental health. This focus on breath work shares similarities with mindfulness practices known to reduce stress.
Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining a healthy weight and overall well-being. Swimming at moderate to vigorous intensity levels contributes positively to sleep quality and duration.
