Mattie Sharp, a registered nurse at Moberly Regional Medical Center's critical care unit, has been honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award is part of the DAISY Foundation's mission to recognize exceptional and compassionate nursing care provided to patients and families.

A nomination stated, “My special needs son was recently a patient. Mattie was so good in caring for him, cleaning him and communicating with him to let him know what she was doing and why. Mattie does her job very well and you can tell she really cares about her patients. A BIG thank you to Mattie for everything. The hospital is lucky to have her.”

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family members after he passed away at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). This auto-immune disease inspired the foundation as a way to thank nurses for their profound impact on patients' lives.

“We are proud to recognize Mattie with The DAISY Award,” MRMC Chief Nursing Officer Adam Harrison said. “Nurses are heroes every day, and it is important that our nurses know their work is valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that. Mattie is such an asset to the MRMC team, and we are so thankful for all that she does for our patients and her colleagues.”

Nurses can be nominated by patients, families, or colleagues, with the recipient chosen by a committee at MRMC. Each honoree receives a certificate commending them as an "Extraordinary Nurse," which reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people." They also receive a DAISY Award pin and a sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists from Zimbabwe's Shona Tribe.
