Congressman Mark Alford of Missouri, alongside several colleagues, has urged the Department of Commerce to adopt a dual strategy to ensure the United States remains at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) development globally. In a letter addressed to Secretary Howard Lutnick, the group emphasized the need for policies that limit foreign adversaries' capabilities while enhancing American competitiveness in AI.

The call to action is supported by Representatives Jack Bergman, Andrew Garbarino, Diana Harshbarger, Robert Wittman, John McGuire, Ben Cline, and Vern Buchanan. They advocate for a balanced approach that secures America's lead in AI against countries like China.

In their letter, they praised actions taken under former President Trump's administration to bolster American technological advancements. "Under President Trump’s leadership," they wrote, "the United States is shaping emerging technologies globally and positioned as the world capital of artificial intelligence (AI)."

They also highlighted concerns over potential threats from China if America fails to maintain its lead in AI development. The letter stressed the importance of providing a stable environment for American innovators and ensuring that allies view the U.S. as a reliable partner.

The group warned against reverting to previous policies which they claim caused confusion among international partners. "We can only win the AI race with Communist China if we are wisely limiting our foreign adversary’s opportunities," they stated.

The letter concludes with an emphasis on urgency: "Steps must be taken quickly since investments happening now will create the world’s tech ecosystem for decades to come."
