The University of Missouri women's tennis team concluded its weekend road trip with a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Auburn on Sunday, March 23, in Alabama. The Tigers now hold an overall record of 11-8 and are 2-7 in Southeastern Conference play, while Auburn improved to 17-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
Missouri started the match in doubles but quickly fell behind. The Tigers lost at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions by scores of 6-1 and 6-0, respectively. Senior Mary Brumfield and freshman Korina Roso faced Auburn’s No. 16-ranked pair, DJ Bennett and Ava Hraster, but their match was left unfinished with Missouri trailing 4-2.
In singles play, Missouri was unable to recover as it dropped matches on courts one, five, and six, which secured the win for Auburn. On court two, senior Inah Canete’s match went unfinished with a score of 0-6, 5-1 against Ava Hraster. Graduate student Lailaa Bashir on court three was leading No. 65-ranked Angella Okutovi before that match was also abandoned at 6-3, 1-1. On court four, Korina Roso took the first set against No. 36 Merna Refaat before her ranked match was halted.
The Tigers will return home to host No. 49 Ole Miss in Columbia on Friday at 2:30 p.m. CT. Depending on weather conditions, the match will be played either inside Green Tennis Center or at the Country Club of Missouri.
