The University of Missouri women's tennis team secured a 4-3 victory over No. 55 Mississippi State at the Green Tennis Center on Sunday, March 2. With this win, Missouri improves its season record to 10-3 overall and 1-2 in Southeastern Conference play, while Mississippi State falls to 9-3 and remains winless in conference matches.
This result marks Missouri's first win against a nationally ranked opponent since defeating No. 43 Kentucky on March 11, 2022.
Missouri began the match by capturing the doubles point after winning two out of three matches. Andrea Artimedi and Mary Brumfield won their match on court three with a score of 6-2. On court two, Zoe Lazar and Lailaa Bashir clinched the doubles point for Missouri by winning their match 7-5.
In singles play, Lazar finished first for Missouri with a straight-set victory (7-5, 6-2) on court four. Inah Canete added another point for the Tigers by winning her match in two sets, including a second-set tiebreaker (7-5, 7-6). Brumfield took her match to three sets but was ultimately defeated (4-6, 6-4, 4-6) on court one. Artimedi sealed the overall team win for Missouri with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-3) on court five.
Head Coach Bianca Turati said: "Incredible team effort today. Mississippi State came here ranked No. 55, with several good wins earlier this season. There was a good level of tennis on all courts. I am proud of how the team handled the tension of the match. We started strong, fighting hard and winning the doubles point with Zoe and Lailaa saving a match point on court three. After that, we knew it would also be a battle in singles. Big congrats to Zoe, who also showed up today in singles. That was a good win for Inah. She found a way to finish it when the match got very tight, especially in the second set. Andrea gave a great performance to close out the match. She held her nerves and played with courage to finish it off. As we move forward, we will keep working hard with the awareness that we can do some damage in this conference."
Missouri will next travel to Norman, Oklahoma for an away contest against No. 12 Oklahoma Sooners on Friday, March 7 at 5 p.m., followed by a visit to Fayetteville, Arkansas to face No. 70 Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday, March 9 at noon.
