The University of Missouri women's tennis team, ranked No. 66 nationally, lost 4-0 to No. 18 South Carolina on Friday in Columbia, S.C. The Tigers now hold a 12-11 overall record and are 2-10 in Southeastern Conference matches this season. South Carolina improved to 13-7 overall and 8-4 in SEC play.
Missouri dropped the doubles point after losing at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, both by a score of 6-4. The top doubles match, featuring senior Mary Brumfield and freshman Korina Roso against the nation's No. 31-ranked pair, was tied at 6-6 when it was left unfinished.
In singles competition, Missouri faced three nationally-ranked opponents. Two of those matches were not completed before the team result was decided. At the No. 2 spot, senior Inah Canete trailed No. 59 Kaitlyn Carnicella with a score of 5-7, 0-2 when their match was stopped. Freshman Zoe Lazar won her first set against No. 97 Misa Malkin and was tied in the second set at 3-3 before that match also went unfinished. Freshman Gian Octa led her opponent Lauren Friedman at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-3, 4-3 before play ended.
South Carolina's Sarah Hamner defeated Brumfield at the top singles position after Brumfield retired early in the second set with Hamner leading, while Olympe Lancelot beat Roso in straight sets (6-2, 6-3). Bella Larsson added another point for South Carolina by defeating Andrea Artimedi (6-0, 6-1).
Missouri will continue its road trip Sunday with a match against top-ranked Georgia at noon Central Time at Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
