The University of Missouri wrestling team, ranked No. 25, lost to No. 13 Iowa State by a score of 21-18 on Senior Day at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Missouri. With this result, the Tigers’ record moves to 5-10 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 competition. Iowa State improves its season mark to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
Iowa State began the dual with four straight wins, taking a commanding lead of 15-0 before Missouri scored any points. Redshirt junior Logan Gioffre narrowly lost his match against sixth-ranked Paniro Johnson with a score of 4-1. Redshirt sophomore James Conway stopped Iowa State’s run with a significant upset at 157 pounds, winning his bout 9-3 and earning Missouri’s first points of the day.
After intermission, Missouri responded with back-to-back falls from redshirt sophomore Cam Steed and senior Keegan O'Toole, which tied the match at 15 apiece. In subsequent matches, redshirt juniors Colton Hawks (184 pounds) and Jesse Cassatt (197 pounds) both fell short in close contests against their opponents from Iowa State. The Cyclones led by six points heading into the final match.
Redshirt junior Seth Nitzel concluded the dual for Missouri by defeating Daniel Herrera, whom he had previously lost to earlier in the season.
“The Cyclones now hold a 46-12 all-time advantage over Missouri all-time.
O'Toole's win marks the 100th of his career and moves him to 12-0 this season.
Conway's 9-3 decision marks his second-ranked and 14th-overall win of the season.
Additionally, Conway's victory over eighth-ranked Chittum marked his second upset of the season after knocking off Northern Colorado's Vinny Zerban at the Cougar Clash in December.
Steed's fall at 165 pounds marked his ninth bonus point victory of the season and his fourth fall.
O'Toole's return marked his first match since defeating returning 157-pound National Champion Levi Haines at the Collegiate Duals in December. His victory marked his 11th bonus point victory of the season.
This was Nitzel and Herrera's second meeting this season, with Herrera defeating Nitzel on Nov. 18.
Steed improves to 2-0 against Aiden Riggins this season, defeating him earlier this season at the Cyclone Open.”
Next up for Missouri is a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma for participation in the Big 12 Championship starting Saturday, March 8.
