The University of Missouri track and field teams began competition at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Lexington, Kentucky, on Thursday. After the first day, the women's team is in third place with 11 points, while the men's team holds sixth place with six points.
Valentina Barrios led the women's team by earning a silver medal and setting a new school record in the javelin throw with a distance of 58.20 meters (190-11). This performance gave Missouri its first eight points of the meet. Monica Wanjiku added three more points for the women's squad by finishing sixth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:29.76.
For the men's team, Callan Saldutto placed fifth in javelin with a throw of 71.35 meters (234-1), contributing four points. Sam Innes finished seventh in hammer throw at 67.15 meters (220-3), adding two points to Missouri's total.
Several athletes achieved personal bests during Thursday's events. Brooke Sawatzky set personal records in her first two heptathlon events, running the 100-meter hurdles in 15.03 seconds and clearing 1.50 meters (4-11) in high jump. In women's javelin, Morgan Cannon finished tenth with a personal-best throw of 48.33 meters (158-6). Charlotte Cullen also recorded an individual best by completing the women's 800-meter preliminary race in 2:12.36.
Competition continues Friday at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Complex, starting with the heptathlon long jump at 10:45 a.m.
