Rep. Mark Alford, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 4th district since 2023, posted a series of tweets on October 20, 2025, criticizing ongoing congressional gridlock and blaming Democrats for what he calls the "Schumer Shutdown."
In his first post of the day, Alford stated: "Good morning. Friendly reminder:
@HouseGOP: Passed CLEAN funding bills weeks ago.
The Left: Still holding America hostage.
Result: Day 20 of the Schumer Shutdown.
Families deserve paychecks, not political games." (October 20, 2025)
Later that afternoon, he reiterated his position with another tweet: "Day 20 of the #SchumerShutdown — America held hostage.
The Left is stuck in the same sand trap on a golf course, swinging the same failed play. Meanwhile, families are paying the price." (October 20, 2025)
Addressing comments reportedly made by Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, Alford wrote: " Hakeem Jeffries says we’re on vacation? I call BS on that.
Day 20 of the Schumer Shutdown — we’re on the road, still working for Missouri while Democrats hold America hostage. #SchumerShutdown" (October 20, 2025)
Alford’s statements refer to an ongoing government shutdown that had reached its twentieth day as of his posts. He attributes responsibility to Senate Democrats and uses the term "Schumer Shutdown," referencing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Mark Alford succeeded Vicky Hartzler in Congress in 2023 and is currently serving Missouri's 4th District. He was born in Baytown, Texas in 1963 and resides in Lake Winnebago. Alford graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988.
