Rep. Mark Alford, who represents Missouri’s 4th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on October 20 and 21, 2025, addressing issues related to the ongoing government shutdown and local healthcare initiatives.
On October 20, Alford wrote about the impact of the government shutdown on state social services: " Due to the Schumer Shutdown, the Missouri Department of Social Services is advising that SNAP benefits will be suspended for November. Why are Democrats fighting for illegal aliens at the expense of hungry American families??" He attributed responsibility for the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to what he called the "Schumer Shutdown," referencing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Later that day, Alford shared details from a visit to a rehabilitation facility in Columbia: "Proud to visit RUSK Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbia — where Encompass Health and MU Health Care are changing lives every day through world-class rehabilitative care. Thank you to Medical Director Dr. Joseph Burris and Chief Nursing Officer Elizabeth Bagby for showing us".
On October 21, he returned to criticism of congressional Democrats during the government shutdown: "On day 20 of the #SchumerShutdown, Dems continue to cater to their far-left base as federal workers go unpaid & SNAP runs out of funding. Dems must reopen the gov’t so we can finish our @HouseAppropsGOP work before time runs out. + my thoughts on Hamas breaking the ceasefire."
Alford has served in Congress since 2023 after replacing Vicky Hartzler as representative for Missouri’s 4th district. He was born in Baytown, Texas in 1963 and currently resides in Lake Winnebago. Alford earned his BA from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988.
