U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) released a statement following the conclusion of the government shutdown, which lasted 43 days and was the longest in U.S. history.
“The Schumer Shutdown national nightmare is over. Democrats spent 43 days ‘fighting’ President Trump at the expense of the American people and have absolutely nothing to show for it. Republicans said from the beginning we would not allow the American people to be held hostage for cheap political points, and we didn’t. Finally, the government is back open, and we can now get back to work on the remaining appropriations bills through regular order,” said Senator Schmitt.
The resolution that ended the shutdown provides funding for federal agencies until January 30, 2026. In addition to this temporary measure, Congress passed three appropriations bills covering Military Construction/Veterans Affairs, Agriculture, and Legislative Branch for fiscal year 2026.
