Providing safe, reliable, and affordable water is a priority for City of Columbia Water & Light.

In order to maintain adequate cash reserves and meet the Utility’s debt coverage requirements, Water & Light has proposed water rate increases for all customer accounts. Citizens will have the opportunity to provide input on the City’s Fiscal Year 2025 budget, including the proposed water rates, at the Aug. 5 City Council meeting.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 701 East Broadway.

If approved by the City Council, the water rate increases would go into effect beginning with the first billing cycle in October 2024.

The City of Columbia acknowledges that rate increases can impact customers’ budgets. However, to meet escalating costs related to operations and maintenance, City of Columbia Utilities must ensure that it can meet its financial obligations. The sale of water is the major source of revenue for the Water Utility, which serves more than 51,000 customers.
