Hollie Campbell has resided in Columbia for over a decade but began her volunteer activities only recently. In 2023, she explored the City of Columbia’s volunteer website and discovered various opportunities to serve.
Campbell became involved with Columbia’s volunteer programs in 2023, contributing to the Litter Team, TreeKeepers, and Household Hazardous Waste Collection.
“I wanted to do more in my community to give back for all of the joy my community brings me,” she said.
Currently, Campbell works with the Litter Team and TreeKeepers. She also serves as a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Aide, helping keep hazardous materials out of the city’s landfill by ensuring they are repurposed, recycled, or safely disposed of if necessary.
TreeKeepers volunteers complete a course on tree care and maintenance and assist city staff with tree care projects in local parks. This role suits Campbell well as she maintains eight different plant propagations at home.
She expressed that she enjoys helping others and finds fulfillment in completing tasks while expanding her network.
“The people I’ve encountered, from staff to other volunteers, have all been amazing, with wonderful life experiences they’re happy to share,” she said.
Outside of volunteering, Campbell enjoys crocheting blankets and toys and tending to her houseplants.
“Just start,” Campbell advised those considering volunteering. “The only thing holding you back is you!”
