Columbia Regional Airport has announced the return of United Airlines, which will resume flights to Denver International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport starting September 25. United Airlines will offer one daily flight to Denver and two daily flights to Chicago O’Hare. The airline had previously suspended service due to the COVID-19 pandemic but is now returning with upgraded aircraft.

The flights will include first-class options, with the twice-daily Chicago route utilizing a CRJ-550 aircraft featuring 10 United First seats and 20 Economy Plus seats. These planes are equipped with in-seat power, Wi-Fi, and enhanced onboard bag storage.

City Manager De’Carlon Seewood stated, “We are proud to work with United Airlines to expand routes for passengers.” He emphasized that introducing new destinations has been a priority for Columbia Regional Airport (COU) and this partnership aims to enhance convenience for both business and leisure travelers.

A Passenger Demand Analysis from 2024 highlighted Denver as a top-requested destination at COU. This demand was echoed during the City’s inaugural Community Summit in March 2025. The Denver flight is supported by the Small Community Air Service Development Program Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Mark Weithofer, managing director of Domestic Network Planning at United Airlines, expressed satisfaction about returning to Central Missouri: “United is pleased to return...providing travelers with daily, direct service on two-cabin aircraft to our global hubs in Denver and Chicago.”

The addition of these flights is seen as vital for supporting local economic drivers such as the University of Missouri. University President Mun Choi noted, “Increased air service is an incredible resource for our university and the entire community,” citing ambitious plans including a new research reactor aimed at producing cancer-fighting radiopharmaceuticals.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe commented on the broader economic implications: “United Airlines’ return to Columbia is a strong vote of confidence in Missouri’s growing economy...When private industry chooses to invest and expand in our state, it shows that Missouri is open for business.”

Flight reservations can be made starting May 22 at 5 p.m. through United.com.
