Senator Eric Schmitt, a U.S. Senator from Missouri, posted a series of tweets on July 28, 2025, raising concerns about the assignment of federal Judge James Boasberg to multiple high-profile cases involving the Trump administration and questioning judicial impartiality.
In his first tweet at 15:34 UTC, Schmitt stated: "According to the memo, while at a Judicial Conference meeting, Boasberg indicated that he and his colleagues were concerned that the Trump administration would defy court orders, despite the Trump administration’s compliance with every court order to date."
Minutes later in another post, Schmitt continued: "In March, Judge Boasberg was assigned to four major Trump cases in the first days of the administration, statistically very improbable. Further, Judge Boasberg took over the Alien Enemies case, despite not being the emergency judge on duty that night."
In a third tweet published at 15:34 UTC as well, Schmitt commented on perceived inconsistencies in judicial responses across administrations: "These revelations are made even more egregious by the fact that these same liberal judges had nothing to say when President Biden openly flouted the Supreme Court's rejection of his unlawful student loan bailout."
Judge James Boasberg is a federal judge who has presided over several notable cases in recent years. The assignment process for federal judges is typically random or based on established procedures within each district court; however, questions have occasionally arisen regarding statistical anomalies or reassignment practices. During both the Trump and Biden administrations, judicial decisions and executive compliance with court rulings have been subjects of public debate.
