University of Missouri Health Care and the MU School of Medicine have received national recognition from the American Medical Association (AMA) in 2025 for their efforts to support physician well-being. The organizations were named as a Joy in Medicine organization, a distinction given to health systems, hospitals, and medical groups that implement strategies aimed at reducing burnout among doctors and improving their professional satisfaction.

The Joy in Medicine Health Recognition Program, established by the AMA in 2019, evaluates how organizations address occupational distress among physicians. The program issues gold, silver, and bronze designations based on an organization's initiatives to combat work-related burnout. This year, MU Health Care earned the bronze level of distinction.

Dr. Shelly Farnan, chief wellness officer at MU Health Care, stated: “This recognition signals to current and future team members that MU Health Care and MU School of Medicine are committed to creating a culture of wellness and fostering joy, purpose and meaning in health care. Even more inspiring is knowing that we are only just beginning creating a culture where caring for health care workers and patients go hand in hand, further enhancing our ability to save and improve lives.”

According to the AMA President Dr. Bobby Mukkamala: “Joy in Medicine recognized organizations are leading the gains made against the physician burnout crisis and help clinicians rediscover the deep rewards and joy that comes from helping patients. The AMA distinction honors each organization’s commitment to not only the health and well-being of the care team, but also to patients. Quality care ultimately originates from a positive and purposeful work culture where health care professionals can flourish both mentally and physically.”
