Mizzou women’s basketball falls short against Kansas in StorageMart Border Showdown

Mizzou women's basketball lost to Kansas 82-77 in the StorageMart Border Showdown on Saturday at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Junior guard Shannon Dowell led the Tigers with 18 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Grace Slaughter contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Jordana Reisma scored 14 points, making all six of her shots from the field. She also added four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

The game began with both teams trading baskets. Reisma scored the first four points for Mizzou in the paint. Midway through the first quarter, Slaughter grabbed a defensive rebound and hit a three-pointer to tie the game before Dowell’s put-back layup gave Mizzou its first lead. Kansas regained control late in the quarter, leading 21-17 after one period.

In the second quarter, several Mizzou players made three-pointers, including senior guard Saniah Tyler, who played her first minutes of the season after returning from injury. Despite shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc in this frame, Missouri trailed 49-39 at halftime as Kansas maintained its offense.

After halftime, Mizzou outscored Kansas early in the third quarter with an 11-2 run. Dowell scored five quick points and Reisma added six more during this stretch. A free throw by Slaughter tied the score at 56 before Tyler’s second three-pointer gave Mizzou a brief lead. The Tigers were down by four entering the final quarter.

Reisma started the fourth with another basket inside, followed by Slaughter tying it up again on Mizzou’s next possession. In the last minute of play, Dowell scored at the rim and then made a free throw to bring Missouri within three possessions of Kansas' lead.

Despite outscoring their opponent in the second half and seeing six lead changes throughout a closely contested match-up, Mizzou was unable to come back for a win.

Missouri will return home to face Southern Illinois on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., with coverage available on SEC Network+.
