The City of Columbia has a Rental Unit Conservation Law established to ensure rental properties remain safe and in good repair. This law mandates that all residential rental properties, including apartments, duplexes, single-family homes, and owner-occupied homes with tenants, must have a license.

Currently, more than 27,800 housing units and nearly 10,000 structures are registered under this program. The law also allows tenants to file complaints if their landlords fail to address maintenance issues.

For those needing to register a property or concerned about the rental status of a property they live in or is in their neighborhood, contact Neighborhood Services at [email protected], call 573.874.2489, or visit CoMo.gov.

City Source is mailed monthly to all City of Columbia utility customers and is available free at City Hall. It is produced by the Creative Services and Marketing and Engagement and Public Communication divisions.
